Cambodia Holds Public Forums to Foster Closer Ties Between Authorities and Residents

A public forum aimed at fostering mutual understanding and cooperation between local residents and administrative authorities was held in Bathei district, Kampong Cham province, Cambodia. On September 23, 2026, the forum, presided over by Deputy Prime Minister Ly Thuch (First Vice President of the Mine and Mine Victim Assistance Authority and Head of the Government Working Group for Bathei District), saw the participation of approximately 300 residents from four villages in Bathei district. Deputy Prime Minister Ly Thuch emphasized that the establishment of such public forums demonstrates the "clean relationship" between the authorities and the people. He reiterated the Cambodian government's commitment, under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet, to national development, defense, peace maintenance, economic and social growth, poverty reduction, political stability, human resource development, and the promotion of public health through initiatives like the B.A.S.S card, equity card, and poverty card. The objective of this forum was to understand the progress of local development and to listen directly to the requests and concerns of the residents for prompt resolution. Numerous specific requests directly related to residents' livelihoods were raised, including the supply of fuel for irrigation pumps, excavation of water canals, road repair and construction, building of fences and school buildings, reopening of public roads blocked by private property, and provision of uniforms for village self-defense forces. Many of the issues raised were addressed and explained on the spot. For matters requiring more time for resolution, it was indicated that the relevant administrative bodies and working groups would discuss and address them separately. The forum proceeded smoothly with active participation from residents, and it is expected to contribute to strengthening resident participation and collaboration with civil society and the private sector in local development.
