The ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH) visited a civilian area in Preah Vihear province, Cambodia, which suffered extensive damage from Thai military airstrikes and shelling in December 2025. The mission aims to verify ceasefire compliance and foster transparency and confidence-building.
The ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH) conducted an observation mission on August 6, 2026, at the village of Sraem Chhng, Sraem commune, Choam Ksan district, Preah Vihear province, in northeastern Cambodia. The mission aimed to verify and report on the situation in the area. According to a press release from the Ministry of National Defense, the observer team visited Sraem Chhng village, which is inhabited by innocent civilians, at 8:30 AM on Thursday, August 6, 2026. The press release highlighted that this location is not a military site but the residence of innocent civilians. The area reportedly came under attack by Thai military forces in December 2025, involving bombing from F-16 fighter jets and multiple 155mm artillery shells, resulting in extensive destruction and damage to civilian homes, property, and infrastructure. Cambodia has consistently provided full support to the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) and emphasized its indispensable role in strengthening the AOT's mandate to verify and ensure the full and effective implementation of ceasefire agreements. This effort is aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and mutual trust. The Cambodian government and the Ministry of National Defense reiterated their firm, sincere, and highly responsible commitment to fully and strictly adhere to the Joint Declaration of the 3rd Extraordinary Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on December 27, 2025, the Joint Statement on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand on October 26, 2025, and other relevant agreements. This commitment is directed towards the rapid improvement of relations and the return to normalcy, peace, and long-term stability. Source: AKP Khmer
