Repair work underway for Moebye Dam damaged by terrorists

It is reported that repair work is being carried out on the Moebye Dam, which was damaged by terrorists. It is reported that repair work on the Moebye Dam, which is extremely important for flood control, electricity generation, agriculture, and navigation, and which was damaged by terrorists in 2023, has been underway since the 2026-2027 fiscal year, and that damaged structures, the dam itself, and related hydraulic structures will continue to be repaired in accordance with the fiscal year. It is reported that 44 structures, including a guesthouse, office buildings, staff housing, and warehouses at the Moebye control station downstream of the dam, were destroyed by terrorists, and one government vehicle (TE) was set on fire and destroyed, along with transformers and machinery in the warehouses. In addition, the spillway control room building and control systems, the navigation lock control room building and control systems, one 108 kVA generator, transformers and power lines, and the water supply building and water equipment were also destroyed. As a result, the spillway gates could not be opened and closed automatically and quickly, causing delays in dam water regulation and release operations, and the navigation lock gates could not be opened and closed, affecting water transport. It is reported that the country suffered approximately 10 billion kyats in damages due to the destruction caused by terrorists at the Moebye Dam and the entire station. With the improvement of regional security conditions, staff were able to re-enter the Moebye Dam area only from July 27, 2025. Mine clearance operations around the dam area are being carried out in cooperation with the local military headquarters and staff, and clearing of trees and undergrowth around the dam and buildings is being carried out using three government vehicles/machinery. It is reported by the Ministry of Electricity and Energy that repair and reconstruction work on the destruction caused by terrorists will continue. The Moebye Dam is located on the Bilu River, approximately 9.5 miles southeast of Falam Township in Shan State (South), and is an earth dam with a length of 8,000 feet and a height of 60 feet. It has four spillway gates and one navigation lock gate. The Moebye Dam was constructed with state funds, with construction beginning in 1967 and completed in 1970. The Moebye Dam stores and regulates a total of 687,000 acre-feet of water for the required amount of water for the Bilu River No. 1, 2, and 3 hydroelectric power plants and for the 20,000 acres of the dam's downstream irrigation area. In addition, the Moebye Dam contributes to water transport as it includes a navigation lock, and it also plays a role in reducing environmental damage to Inle Lake upstream of the dam and in mitigating flood damage in the downstream areas, making it a multipurpose dam that contributes in one way or another.
