Cambodia Launches First Green Finance Network to Boost Low-Carbon Investment
Cambodia has launched its first Green Finance Network, a collaborative platform led by the Association of Banks and GGGI, aiming to accelerate investment in renewable energy and sustainable construction to facilitate the transition to low-carbon infrastructure.
PHNOM PENH, July 31, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia's banking sector has taken a significant step towards achieving its sustainable development goals with the official launch of the Green Finance Network (GFN Cambodia). Spearheaded by the Association of Banks in Cambodia (ABC) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), the network aims to establish a unified, industry-driven platform to scale up green investments and accelerate the country’s transition towards low-carbon infrastructure. The inaugural meeting convened over 50 high-level representatives from commercial banks, financial institutions, the German Embassy, the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), and the Asia Low Carbon Buildings Transition (ALCBT) Project Implementation Unit. Officials stated that the network's objectives include mobilizing financing for renewable energy, sustainable construction, and climate-resilient infrastructure, while also promoting best practices in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. Representatives from ABC emphasized the growing awareness within Cambodia's banking sector regarding the need to align with international sustainability frameworks, especially as demand for financing projects that reduce emissions and enhance resilience increases. GGGI noted that this initiative will help bridge the gap between policy and practice by providing a platform for banks, regulators, and development partners to coordinate their efforts. Cambodia has pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 41 percent by 2030 under its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). Officials believe that green finance will be critical to meeting these targets, particularly in the energy, transport, and construction sectors. The launch of GFN Cambodia signifies the banking industry's first coordinated effort to embed sustainability into financial decision-making, with participants agreeing to develop joint strategies, capacity-building programs, and pilot projects in the coming months.
