Cambodia Directs Provincial Media to Combat Fake News with Clear Strategy
Cambodia's Ministry of Information has instructed provincial media outlets to accurately grasp national and international situations and formulate prompt, effective communication strategies to counter disinformation. The Ministry of Information has instructed for strengthening strategies to combat disinformation. Tep Asnarith, Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Information, urged provincial and municipal information officials to accurately grasp national and international events and formulate strategies to provide accurate and effective information to residents. This aims to counter fake news and misleading information. The directive was given during a meeting with officials from the Koh Kong Provincial Department of Information on July 13, 2026. Deputy Minister Asnarith pointed out that rapidly evolving technology is leading to an increase in fake news, emphasizing that information officials must maintain high vigilance and implement strict information management and response measures. He stated that the most effective method to counter fake news is to dispel it with truthful information. The Deputy Minister explained that when information officials have sufficient information and input, they can respond promptly and accurately, reducing public misunderstanding and preventing the distortion of facts about Cambodia's situation, especially in local areas, by foreign entities or malicious groups. He positioned the Information Departments as crucial bridges connecting the government and the people, serving as indispensable staff officers at both local administrative and national levels. Asnarith stated that provincial and municipal Information Departments play a vital role as the 'front line' in the information war within their respective regions. However, to ensure overall strength and operational efficiency, strong internal unity and cooperation within the teams are essential. He also stressed the need to maintain good cooperation with relevant ministries and authorities at all levels to build a robust information and public opinion network. Furthermore, he encouraged provincial and municipal Information Departments to actively produce and disseminate information about leaders' activities, local development, and events within the provinces through their official websites and social media. Mom Malika, Director of the Koh Kong Provincial Department of Information, pledged to enhance the team''s capabilities and utilize digital technology to produce information content about leaders' activities and local development achievements more actively and in a timely manner.
