Thai PM Emphasizes Commitment to ASEAN Unity and Regional Cooperation

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin visited the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC) in Jakarta, Indonesia, reaffirming Thailand's role as a founding member and expressing support for strengthening ASEAN's capabilities. Upon arrival, the Prime Minister planted a tree in the Secretariat's garden as a memento of his visit, signed the visitor's book, and took a photo with the ASEAN Secretary-General before the meeting. During the discussions, Prime Minister Srettha stated, "Thailand is committed to building a unified ASEAN and playing a prominent role on the global stage. We are also ready to support all activities of the ASEAN Secretariat to achieve a stronger ASEAN Community." He also indicated his intention to attend the ASEAN Summit in Manila later this year. The Prime Minister reiterated Thailand's policy of supporting ASEAN's unity, adding that Thailand will host the President of Myanmar at the Government House this weekend. ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn praised the success of the Prime Minister's official visit to Indonesia and his visit to the ASEAN Secretariat, which reaffirmed Thailand's role in ASEAN. He also affirmed support for Thailand's ASEAN chairmanship in 2028. Dr. Kao noted that ASEAN is undergoing a period of change, requiring strong political will from leaders like the Thai Prime Minister to promote peace, stability, and a stronger ASEAN. During the talks, the Prime Minister also addressed the situation between Thailand and Cambodia. He affirmed Thailand's commitment to utilizing the mechanisms of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), stating that as UNCLOS members, both countries can use it as a guideline for negotiations. However, he expressed regret that Cambodia chose the process of Compulsory Conciliation, the outcome of which is not binding on the consulting country. The Secretary-General understood the situation, affirmed that ASEAN should be united, and hoped that everything could develop for the better, as Thailand and Cambodia are neighboring countries.
