Jakarta to Implement Artificial Rain Weekly to Combat El Niño Effects
The Jakarta Provincial Government will implement artificial rain (weather modification) once or twice a week to combat the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon. This initiative aims to mitigate fire risks and ensure the availability of clean water.
The Jakarta Provincial Government has announced plans to implement artificial rain (weather modification) once or twice a week as a measure against the severe drought caused by the El Niño phenomenon. This strategy is intended to cope with the peak of the dry season, which is predicted to be longer than in 2023. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that coordination has been carried out with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding weather modification. He told reporters on Wednesday (August 5, 2026), "The peak of El Niño will likely be prolonged, possibly longer than in 2023. Rain is expected from late September or the first two weeks of October." Although the probability of cloud formation for weather modification is currently relatively low, Pramono has instructed relevant departments to proceed with preparations. He added, "Even in situations like last night, artificial rain can be done without clouds." Pramono has already given his approval for the implementation of artificial rain once or twice a week. Given the prediction of a prolonged drought, the provincial government is focusing on two main countermeasures: "fire prevention" and "ensuring the supply of clean water." Furthermore, considering the increased risk of fires and the potential rise in Acute Respiratory Infection (ISPA) cases, he has requested each RW (neighborhood unit) to prepare portable fire extinguishers (APAR).
