Mù Cang Chải Authorities Warn Tourists Against Dangerous Photo Ops

Authorities in Vietnam's northern Mù Cang Chải region are issuing warnings after tourists were observed dangerously perching on railings of viewing huts to capture photos of the iconic terraced rice fields. The practice, widely shared on social media, has prompted local authorities to inspect and enforce safety measures. On September 24, videos and photographs circulating on social media showed tourists standing directly on the railings of a scenic viewing hut at Little Raspberry Hill in Púng Luông Commune, Lào Cai Province, to take pictures and videos overlooking the Mù Cang Chải terraced rice fields. These visuals garnered tens of thousands of interactions and millions of views, sparking public outcry against visitors risking their lives for social media content. Little Raspberry Hill, known for its panoramic views of cascading terraced fields and winding streams, is a popular spot where local residents have set up small huts for tourists seeking photo opportunities. Following reports of tour guides allowing guests to film in perilous locations, the People’s Committee of Púng Luông Commune launched an immediate inspection of all unauthorized viewing huts in the area on September 24. Ms. Hờ Thị Dê, Vice Chairwoman of the Púng Luông Commune People’s Committee, stated that several hillside landowners had erected huts overlooking the valley and rice paddies, charging approximately 10,000 VND per visit. While some structures were equipped with sturdy, chest-high guardrails, others were built haphazardly, posing significant safety risks. The communal People’s Committee held direct working sessions with the hut operators, demanding the immediate dismantling of any unsafe structures and strictly prohibiting guests from climbing onto railings. For sturdier huts, authorities insisted on posting warning signs explicitly forbidding visitors from standing on the railings. "Once these images are uploaded and go viral across social networks, other visitors might mimic the behavior without anticipating the life-threatening risks involved," Ms. Dê noted. The Púng Luông Commune People’s Committee will issue an awareness circular to local tourism businesses, service providers, and tour guides, requiring them to prevent guests from photographing or filming while standing on railings or in hazardous spots. Local authorities plan to take punitive measures in accordance with regulations if further videos emerge showing visitors in dangerous positions. Next week, the commune will convene a dedicated working session with tourism facility owners, service workers, guides, and porters to reinforce safety standards at all photography vantage points. Little Raspberry Hill is currently in its harvest season, a prime time when scenic attractions across the Mù Cang Chải region draw heavy crowds, especially on weekends. Visitor numbers have steadily increased since the National Day holiday, despite a dip due to concerns over heavy rains and landslides. The terraced rice fields of Mù Cang Chải are a renowned destination in Vietnam’s Northwest, officially designated a Special National Monument in 2020 and recognized by The Telegraph as one of the world's most breathtaking terraced landscapes.
