Over Half of HIV-Positive Individuals Undiagnosed in Philippines - DOH

MANILA, Philippines — Out of the estimated 288,000 people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the Philippines in the first quarter of 2026, only 56 percent had been diagnosed as of June, according to the latest figures from the Department of Health (DOH). The DOH recorded 159,997 people living with HIV who had been diagnosed. This figure suggests that a significant number of individuals with HIV remain unaware of their status, potentially missing out on crucial treatment and prevention opportunities. Early detection and treatment of HIV are vital not only for the health of infected individuals but also for preventing further transmission. The low diagnosis rate presents a major public health challenge. HIV infections have been on the rise in the Philippines in recent years, with particular concern for infections among young people. The DOH plans to enhance awareness campaigns and expand testing services to facilitate early detection of undiagnosed cases, though social stigma and lack of information are cited as barriers to seeking testing.
