Thailand Launches 'Gemini Academy' in Universities to Foster AI Talent

Bangkok – True Corporation, a leading telecommunications provider in Thailand, in collaboration with Google, has launched the "True x Google Presents: AI for All Thais, Gemini Academy at Sripatum University" as a continuation of its national "AI for All Thais" project. This initiative aims to provide students with accessible, practical, and future-ready learning experiences in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Mr. Sharad Mehrotra, Chief Business Officer of Individual Business at True Corporation, emphasized the company's commitment to driving the "AI for All Thais" project, stating, "AI is no longer a distant technology but is becoming a fundamental skill necessary for learning, working, and living in the new era." The introduction of the Gemini Academy at Sripatum University is a step forward from a national vision to practical action, enabling students to learn, experiment with, and apply AI creatively, responsibly, and for the maximum benefit of their future and the country. The Gemini Academy is designed as a hands-on learning experience, allowing students to directly engage with and use Generative AI. This includes practical workshops alongside online learning modules on AI Literacy and AI Safety, building a comprehensive foundation of understanding regarding AI, from effective usage and crafting proper prompts to recognizing the importance of safety, ethics, and responsibility in technology use. At Sripatum University, the project is set to conduct a total of 13 training sessions, reaching over 9,100 students. This aims to ensure that AI learning is not confined to a select group of experts but is broadly accessible to students, thereby building a robust digital skills foundation for the nation's young workforce. Assistant Professor Dr. Wirat Lertpaitoonpan, Vice President of Sripatum University, highlighted the university's focus on preparing graduates for the future, especially in an era where AI plays a significant role across all professions. He added, "This collaboration with True will open opportunities for students to learn world-class technology through real-world experience, enhancing their knowledge, skills, and perspectives for appropriate, creative, and responsible AI application. This will be a crucial foundation for entering the job market and international competition." Beyond university-level training, the "AI for All Thais" project also focuses on laying the groundwork for the nation's AI ecosystem development through collaborations between the private sector, technology sector, government, and educational institutions. This initiative seeks to create a comprehensive AI learning pathway, from foundational knowledge for beginners to advanced skill development aligned with the demands of the modern labor market. True is also offering free internet (10GB for 30 days) for online learning to students aged 7-24. The Gemini Academy is planned to expand to three more universities in July: Assumption University and King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, in addition to Sripatum University. The program aims to reach 22 more universities nationwide by the end of this year, increasing AI knowledge accessibility for Thai students. In the next phase, the project will evolve into the "AI for Future Workforce" curriculum, a 45-hour AI course co-designed by True and Google. This curriculum is intended for integration into university teaching and can be credited towards academic degrees. AI competitions are also planned to provide students with a platform to showcase their practical skills and gain international exposure. This collaboration is not merely about technological training but also about establishing a crucial foundation for empowering the younger generation to use AI intelligently, creatively, and responsibly, positioning them as key drivers for Thailand's advancement into the digital economy and global competitiveness on a sustainable basis.
