Prabowo Targets Mineral and Commodity Exchange to Launch by January 1, 2027

President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia has set a target for the country's Strategic Mineral and Commodity Exchange to commence operations on January 1, 2027. The government also intends to encourage natural resource exports to be conducted through a consolidated one-stop system to tighten supervision. Prabowo conveyed this plan during the 28th anniversary of the PAN party in Jakarta on Friday, September 18, 2026. "We will also create a mineral exchange, the first time it belongs to the state starting January 1, 2027," Prabowo stated. According to Prabowo, the government aims to rectify issues within commodity trading, which has been considered prone to false reporting. By tightening exports, the government seeks to monitor the receipt and value of commodities leaving Indonesia. Furthermore, the government is promoting export trade through State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and a one-stop shop mechanism. The plan for the Strategic Minerals and Commodities Exchange is part of the government's efforts to strengthen control over natural resources. Prabowo repeatedly linked this policy to Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution. He assessed that Indonesia, as a country producing various strategic commodities, needs to possess its own trading instruments. With the exchange, the government aims for Indonesia to hold a stronger position in its commodity trade. While Prabowo targets the exchange to begin operating in early 2027, his speech did not detail the trading mechanisms, the list of commodities to be included, or the operational stages of the exchange.
