Cambodia Boosts Support for Children with Disabilities, Promoting Family Integration and Social Services

The Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation of Cambodia convened a meeting on September 16, 2026, to promote the integration of children with disabilities into families and the provision of social services within the community. Mr. Toch Channy, Secretary of State of the Ministry, stated that the meeting was organized to enhance the well-being and social services for children with disabilities, fostering their care within families after they have transitioned from care centers. The focus is on family reunification, placement with relatives or foster families, and discussing procedures to promote the best interests and provide essential social services to effectively and successfully support the integration of children with disabilities from care centers into community families. The meeting was attended by 40 participants, including Mr. Oeu Sophannara, Director General of Social Services of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, representatives from relevant ministries, specialized departments, and partner organizations. This initiative highlights the Cambodian government's commitment to strengthening support systems for vulnerable populations, particularly children with disabilities. While efforts to improve disability support and social welfare have been undertaken previously, this meeting's emphasis on shifting from institutional care to more family-based and community-rooted support is noteworthy. It signifies a more inclusive approach aimed at ensuring children with disabilities are integrated as members of society.
