UINSA Surabaya Rector's Dismissal Demanded, Parliament Urges Religious Affairs Minister to Suspend

Commission VIII of the House of Representatives (DPR) has strongly urged the Minister of Religious Affairs to suspend the rector of Sunan Ampel State Islamic University (UINSA) Surabaya, Akhmad Muzakki, following student protests demanding his dismissal. "Commission VIII of the DPR RI urges the Minister of Religious Affairs to immediately suspend the position of the UINSA Surabaya rector for the period 2026-2030, so that he cannot consolidate and make strategic policies," said Chairman of Commission VIII DPR Marwan Dasopang, reading the meeting's conclusion at the parliament complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday (22/9/2026). Commission VIII also requested the Minister of Religious Affairs to temporarily take over the leadership at UINSA Surabaya. If the polemic is not resolved within 1 week, then Commission VIII DPR will form a working committee (Panja). "If within 1 week from September 22, 2026, the Minister of Religious Affairs does not succeed in resolving the leadership problem at UINSA Surabaya, Commission VIII DPR RI will form a Panja," he stated. After the meeting, Nasaruddin stated that he would immediately resolve this polemic. Nasaruddin ensured that there would be the best decision regarding this matter. "We will resolve it immediately, Insyaallah. Yes, yes, we are going to resolve it," said Nasaruddin. It is known that UINSA Surabaya students have been holding demonstrations demanding the rector's resignation and have decided to stay overnight on campus. Some of the students have set up tents in front of the rectorate building. "Friends are resting here, like last night some were resting here at the UINSA Student Post in front of the Rectorate Building," said Korlap Koko, quoted from DetikJatim, Monday (21/9). Besides sealing and occupying the campus on Monday morning, UINSA students who demonstrated entered the rectorate building and hung several banners on Monday afternoon around 13:25 WIB. "What we want is Prof. Muzakki to step down immediately, realize. Realize that many bad things, many bad things have happened since the beginning of the term, even. Step down!" he exclaimed. UINSA Surabaya students have been holding demonstrations for the past few days, intending to bring their compiled "1+7" demands to the DPR RI in the hope that Rector Akhmad Muzakki can step down from his position immediately. Deputy Chairman of the UINSA Student Executive, Fadlurrrakhman Fazle Purwardana, or Ale, said that his party had sent a letter to Commission VIII of the DPR RI to request an audience with the Ministry of Religious Affairs regarding Muzakki's dismissal and the overhaul of the rector selection system.
