Govt Refines Giant Sea Wall Master Plan to Tackle Java Coastal Flooding
The Indonesian government plans to revise the master plan for the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) or Giant Sea Wall project, aiming to address severe coastal flooding and land subsidence plaguing Java's northern coast. Relocation and environmental impact assessments are expected to be key aspects.
The Indonesian government is set to refine the master plan for the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD), commonly known as the Giant Sea Wall project, to tackle the escalating issues of coastal flooding and land subsidence along Java's northern coast. This ambitious infrastructure initiative aims to protect a vast stretch of the northern Java coastline, including the capital city of Jakarta. Banyu Purnama Tahardi, a senior official from the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves), stated that the revision of the master plan is necessary, particularly to strengthen aspects concerning resident relocation and the Environmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL). He emphasized the importance of the project''s sustainability and minimizing its impact on local communities. Java's northern coast, especially the areas surrounding Jakarta, has experienced severe land subsidence over the past decades, largely attributed to rapid urbanization and excessive groundwater extraction. This has led to a decrease in land elevation, significantly increasing the risk of storm surges and floods. The Giant Sea Wall was conceived as a colossal infrastructure project to safeguard these coastal areas from further erosion. However, the project has been a subject of debate due to its immense scale, potential environmental consequences, and the possibility of displacing residents. The revised master plan is expected to address these challenges with more comprehensive and sustainable solutions. The government has affirmed its commitment to working closely with relevant ministries and local authorities to formulate the revised master plan. The objective is to maximize the project's feasibility and effectiveness while carefully considering its impact on residents' livelihoods and the environment.
