MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has reaffirmed its commitment to rights-based migration governance. Permanent Representative to the United Nations Carlos Sorreta participated as a panelist at the side event, “A Moderated Conversation on Migration 2030,” held on the margins of the 38th Session of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Standing Committee on Programs and Finance in Geneva. Invited by the European Union Delegation to share the Philippine experience, Sorreta underscored the importance of migrant-centered, rights-based migration governance that protects migrants throughout the entire migration cycle. He highlighted the Philippines’ approach to promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration through strengthened labor mobility partnerships, protection of migrant workers’ rights, portability of social protection and policies that respond to the needs of vulnerable groups, including older persons. Participants explored practical approaches expanding regular migration pathways, enhancing labor mobility, improving migration data and fostering international cooperation toward the 2030 Agenda.
