DOTr to Release Additional Cash Aid for Drivers Amid Oil Price Hikes

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Saturday said it was set to release another round of financial assistance for affected drivers amid oil price hikes through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development. This comes as the proposed fare adjustment for public utility vehicles (PUVs) is being discussed. "We are set to release another round of cash assistance for our drivers and operators who are greatly affected by the increase in fuel prices," DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista said in a statement. Bautista did not provide a timeline for the release of the cash aid, but he assured that the agency is prioritizing the welfare of PUV drivers and operators. "We understand the challenges faced by our drivers and operators due to the increasing cost of fuel. This is why we are working closely with DSWD to ensure that the assistance reaches those who need it most," he added. Meanwhile, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has received proposals for fare adjustments for PUVs. "We are studying the proposals carefully. We need to consider the impact on both the drivers and operators, as well as the commuters," LTFRB Chairperson Teofilo Guadiz III said. Guadiz assured that the LTFRB will conduct public consultations before making any decision on fare adjustments. "We want to ensure that any decision made will be fair and equitable for all stakeholders," he said. Fuel prices in the country have been on an upward trend for weeks, with several oil companies implementing price hikes. This has led to increased operational costs for PUV operators, prompting them to seek fare adjustments. Drivers and operators have been calling on the government to provide subsidies or other forms of assistance to help them cope with the rising fuel prices. They warned that if no action is taken, they may be forced to suspend their operations, which could lead to disruptions in public transportation.
