Cambodian Parliament Speaker Calls for Stronger Ties with Laos Amid External Threats

Cambodian Parliament Speaker Khuon Sodary stated that in the current global context, cooperation among small nations is crucial to counter the influence of external threats that undermine world order. She made these remarks during a meeting with Madam Aliy Vongnorabountham, President of the Lao Women's Federation, on July 23, 2026, at the Parliament building. Speaker Sodary emphasized that Thailand's "war of aggression" against Cambodia is impacting the entire region and that the solidarity of small nations is essential. She further condemned Thailand's use of armed force on Cambodian territory as unjust, damaging to good neighborly relations, and a violation of international law, which could severely affect the region. According to Mr. Keo Pisith, head of the Parliament Speaker's cabinet and spokesperson, the Speaker told the Lao delegation, "Small countries must unite and try to help each other to overcome the storms of this global turning point." Mr. Keo Pisith also relayed that Speaker Sodary informed her Lao counterpart that the border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand is a regional issue, and Cambodia maintains its stance to resolve it peacefully and in accordance with international law. During the meeting, Madam Aliy Vongnorabountham shared information about Laos' political and security situation, its development, and the mission of the Lao Women's Federation. Both sides agreed on the importance of women in leadership roles to further strengthen Cambodia-Laos relations. As neighboring countries and small states, Cambodia and Laos share a common vision of promoting international order based on the rule of law, as well as supporting an open and inclusive multilateral system. It is noteworthy that July 24th marks the one-year anniversary of Thailand's alleged "invasion" of Cambodia. This invasion of Cambodian territory has caused civilian displacement and the destruction of much infrastructure, with Thailand reportedly continuing to illegally occupy Cambodian territory to this day.
