Vietnam: Teacher Arrested Amidst Suspiciously High Math Scores

Duy, who taught a specialized math class, was detained on the afternoon of July 5th. He is known for his own academic achievements, having won national math awards and international accolades during his time as a student at the same gifted high school. After graduating with honors from Hanoi National University of Education in 2020, he returned to his hometown to teach and mentor students for national math competitions. Prior to his arrest, Duy was praised for his dynamism, expertise, and leadership in the school's digital transformation efforts, including the use of AI for personalized learning. He had also received an award from the Tuyen Quang Department of Education and Training for his performance in a provincial teaching competition for the 2024-2025 academic year. A staggering 299 out of 328 students scored 9 or above in mathematics, representing 91.16% of the cohort. When including scores of 8 and above, the figure rose to 98.78%, significantly outperforming many other renowned specialized schools nationwide. Further raising suspicion, 147 out of the 154 perfect scores (10 points) in mathematics recorded across the entire Tuyen Quang province were achieved by students from this single school, concentrated among consecutively numbered exam papers, accounting for over 95% of the provincial total. Following reports of irregularities, Tuyen Quang police mobilized 60 personnel to scrutinize all related processes. Simultaneously, the Ministry of Education and Training established an inter-agency task force, comprising units from the ministry and the Ministry of Public Security, to verify the math exam results in Tuyen Quang. Initial reports indicate no signs of irregularities in the printing, transportation, storage, or grading of exam papers. However, the task force's preliminary data analysis has deemed the math results from the Tuyen Quang High School for the Gifted exam venue as abnormal.
