Probe sought on students’ assault on Davao teacher

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) has been asked to investigate a viral video showing a male teacher being beaten up by students in Maco, Davao de Oro. The incident has sparked discussions on student discipline and the protection of teachers in schools. The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) stated that the incident highlights the lack of adequate protection and authority for teachers to enforce discipline in schools. The video reportedly shows two individuals arguing before one of them attacked the other inside the Elizalde National High School gymnasium. According to the police, the teacher had reprimanded a male student for violating a school policy prohibiting earrings. The student reportedly became furious and attempted to punch the teacher, but was restrained by fellow students. However, another student, identified as the brother of the first student, allegedly hit the teacher from behind. The siblings then reportedly punched the teacher before other students intervened. The teacher sustained injuries and filed a complaint with the police. The students involved have been placed under the custody of the local social welfare office. "While we recognize the importance of the Child Protection Policy, the lack of balance within it often leaves our teachers defenseless and with their hands tied when it comes to disciplining students," ACT said in a statement. The group emphasized that the students involved should be provided with proper guidance and support, not just punishment. ACT reiterated its call for the immediate enactment of the Teacher Protection Bill. "This proposed measure aims to empower teachers to effectively fulfill their role as surrogate parents capable of enforcing discipline while ensuring they have proper guidance and legal protection," the union added. The DepEd has yet to issue a statement on the matter.
