Cambodia: Journalists Investigate Thai Border Dispute's Impact Around Preah Vihear

The Cambodian Journalists Association (CJC) organized a media mission for approximately 50 local and international journalists to the Preah Vihear temple area and affected regions, which have suffered severe impacts from the border conflict with Thailand, from September 9 to 11, 2026. This mission aims to deepen the understanding of both domestic and international citizens through accurate and evidence-based reporting on the severe impact of armed conflicts in border areas on the security, livelihood, and well-being of Cambodian citizens. Regarding the mission to the Preah Vihear temple, CJC President Puy Kea stated, "We are not here to tell journalists what or how they should write. We are here to provide an opportunity for journalists to see, hear, ask, verify, and then professionally decide what should be reported. We are here to seek the truth, not to create falsehoods." The CJC President further emphasized, "We can protect a World Heritage site with pride, but it must be reported professionally and responsibly. Good news is not news that is fast and stirs up nationalism, but news that has evidence and earns the trust of the public." He also mentioned UNESCO's emphasis that World Heritage sites should be protected and serve as instruments for dialogue, understanding, and peace, not for conflict. "Our information mission is to go to the place to understand the truth; and report the truth to the public and for peace," stated the CJC President. Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a crucial location for reporting on the impact of attacks by Thai soldiers on cultural heritage. The CJC is tasking the journalists to inspect the affected areas, gather information on damage to infrastructure, property, and cultural heritage, investigate the impact on the lives and safety of residents in the affected areas, collect testimonies and voices from residents in the affected regions, and report on the risks posed by explosive remnants of war, including unexploded ordnance and other war debris. They are expected to provide the public, both domestic and international, with information based on clear and verifiable sources.
