Cambodia, Germany Vow Deeper Cooperation as German Envoy Departs

PHNOM PENH, July 30, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation as Germany’s ambassador to Phnom Penh, Stefan Messerer, concluded his diplomatic mission after a farewell meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn. During talks on July 29, Sokhonn thanked Messerer for his role in strengthening relations and broadening cooperation across sectors, pledging continued support for the incoming German envoy to sustain momentum in bilateral ties. The discussions focused on boosting cooperation in trade and investment, education, agriculture, agro‑industry, energy, tourism and people‑to‑people exchanges. Both sides underscored the importance of high‑level engagement, describing it as a driver of closer relations during Messerer’s tenure. Officials said Messerer had worked to expand German support in vocational training and technical education, while encouraging greater German investment in Cambodia’s agro‑industry and renewable energy sectors. Tourism and cultural exchanges were also highlighted as areas where cooperation could be deepened. Regional and global developments featured prominently in the talks. Both countries reaffirmed support for international law and stressed the need to resolve disputes through dialogue and diplomacy. Sokhonn also briefed the ambassador on the Cambodia‑Thailand border situation, though no details were disclosed.
