Chinese renewable energy developers eye investment cooperation in Vietnam
Chinese renewable energy developers are showing interest in investment cooperation in Vietnam. The country ranks second among Southeast Asian markets targeted by Chinese investors, following Singapore, with active investments in technology and renewable energy sectors.
According to a September 2024 report from HSBC, Vietnam ranked second among Southeast Asian markets targeted by Chinese investors, only behind Singapore. Vietnam has seen a strong investment inflow from China with the presence of many international corporations in various fields such as technology, electronics, and renewable energy. Energy transition is not simply about replacing fossil fuels with wind and solar power. It also requires building a sustainable energy ecosystem in which clean power generation, energy storage, smart grids and material recycling chains develop in parallel. Such an integrated approach will improve energy efficiency, further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help Vietnam achieve green growth and net-zero emissions targets by 2050. From September 20-22, Vietnamese Ambassador to India Trinh Minh Manh and an Embassy delegation held meetings with Tamil Nadu authorities, trade promotion agencies and businesses to promote investment, trade, industrial and technology cooperation. To achieve the 74-billion-USD export target, the sector needs an additional 24.9 billion USD in the final four months, averaging 6.23 billion USD per month. The state visit to Canada by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam is expected to provide fresh momentum for bilateral economic cooperation. The new agreement between Vietnamese and Indian airlines, which takes immediate effect, doubles the weekly passenger capacity limit to 16,800 seats from the current 8,000. In the World’s Top 100 Airlines ranking, the carrier climbed 57 places from 156th in 2025 to enter the top 100 for the first time. With joint funding mechanisms, clear coordination channels and market-driven projects, technology cooperation between Vietnam and Canada could move beyond the exchange of ideas, turning the two countries' complementary strengths into a shared innovation ecosystem and creating fresh momentum for bilateral economic ties.
