The Lost Elephant Home: A Tale of Hope for Children with Disabilities

A special storytelling event featuring elephants was held at the Malang Creative Center (MCC) in Indonesia to commemorate World Elephant Day, targeting approximately 50 children with disabilities. The event was a collaborative effort between nature conservation organizations Difabel Pecinta Alam (Difpala), Lingkar Sosial (Linksos), and Geopix. Kak Acan, the storyteller, donned an elephant costume and animatedly narrated the tale of two elephant siblings, Gogo and Gigi, mimicking elephant movements. The story depicted Gogo's search for his younger sibling, Gigi, who was separated from the herd due to the sound of a poacher's gunshot. Gogo navigated through forests, rivers, and hills to find Gigi. The children listened intently to the emotional narrative of Gogo overcoming obstacles to reunite with Gigi and return to their herd. Towards the end of the story, when Kak Acan asked, "Where is Gogo and Gigi's home?" the children responded in unison, "In the forest!" This interaction indicated that the children understood the story's message about the importance of nature conservation, that their 'home' is the forest. The three-hour event included educational elements about elephant ecology and forest conservation. Interspersed with the storytelling were artistic performances by the children, including poetry readings, singing, and Quran recitation. This storytelling session was part of a broader campaign titled "Make Elephant Great Again" or "Kembalikan Kejayaan Gajah" (Bring Back Elephant Glory). The campaign aims to rally public support for the protection of Indonesian elephants and their habitats through creative actions and public education.
