Mindoro Solon Urges DOE, ERC Intervention on Soaring Power Rates, Supply Woes

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — Oriental Mindoro Second District Rep. Alfonso Umali Jr. is appealing to the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to immediately intervene and help address the province’s persistent power supply problems and rising electricity costs affecting consumers served by the Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative (Ormeco). In a letter dated June 30 and addressed to Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, Umali urged the DOE and ERC to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the factors behind the unusually high electricity rates, recurring power interruptions, and the quality of electric service in the province. Umali said his office has been receiving numerous complaints from residents across Oriental Mindoro over soaring electricity bills. He also cited concerns over unreliable electricity service, including frequent power supply interruptions and unstable voltage, which he said continue to disrupt households, businesses, schools, hospitals and government operations. The lawmaker noted that while Ormeco has repeatedly explained the reasons behind the high electricity rates, many residents remain unconvinced and continue to seek a clearer explanation and a concrete solution. In his letter, Umali also asked the DOE to review the approval process for power supply facilities, determine whether administrative or regulatory issues contributed to the province’s power supply situation, assess Ormeco’s operational performance, and implement measures to stabilize electricity supply, improve service reliability, and reduce the financial burden on consumers. The lawmaker pointed out that he and Oriental Mindoro First District Rep. Arnan Panaligan had earlier filed House Resolution No. 1101 seeking a congressional inquiry into the province’s continuing power supply issues. Umali stressed that the people of Oriental Mindoro deserve affordable, reliable, and efficient electric service and called for greater transparency and accountability from the institutions responsible for ensuring stable and reasonably priced electricity. “The people of Oriental Mindoro deserve better,” he said.
