Cambodia and Laos Pledge to Strengthen Cultural Cooperation and Technology Adoption

Dr. Pheung Sakona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, has pledged to continue strengthening cooperation with Laos in cultural and artistic exchanges, human resource development, research, and the adoption of new technologies in the cultural sector. This commitment was made on the evening of September 21, 2026, during the event "Laos Culture Day in Cambodia" held at the Chaktomuk Conference Hall. The event was attended by Mr. Sonexay Vannaxay, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to the Kingdom of Cambodia, celebrating the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Laos. Minister Pheung Sakona stated that Cambodia and Laos have historically maintained close friendly relations for a long time, describing them as good neighbors with a special traditional friendship and a strategic partnership characterized by the highest level of mutual trust. She added that the bond of friendship between the two countries has been deeply rooted in history and nurtured from generation to generation, based on mutual trust, strong solidarity, and a shared aspiration to achieve continued peace and prosperity for the peoples of both countries, the region, and the world. She further noted that 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Laos. The artistic performances, including dances, songs, and musical instrumental recitals, have deepened the understanding of the exquisite artistic cultures of both nations, serving as a strong bridge connecting the friendship and solidarity of their peoples. Minister Pheung Sakona continued, saying that the current artistic performances serve as a platform showcasing mutual cultural exchange, which is a testament to the close cooperation in the cultural sector between the two countries. She added that the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, along with the strengthening of international cooperation, are core components of Cambodia's national policy. Cambodia is committed not only to protecting its temples, ancient sites, and archaeological areas but also to safeguarding its intangible cultural heritage, including traditional dances, customs, performing arts, handicrafts, languages, traditional knowledge, and especially the communities that have preserved and passed down this intangible cultural heritage from one generation to the next. Minister Pheung Sakona emphasized that for Cambodia, as for all countries globally, cultural heritage is our national identity and cultural sovereignty. Protecting heritage is protecting memory, protecting dignity and identity, and ensuring that these heritages are passed on to future generations. International cooperation, solidarity, and mutual respect are of great importance. The heritage of each country contributes to the diversity of human culture as a whole. Therefore, Cambodia actively participates on the international stage in heritage protection, promotes culture as a bridge for peace, and condemns acts of cultural destruction.
