Vietnam, Russian veterans reaffirm enduring bonds of wartime solidarity

As part of ongoing efforts to implement bilateral defense cooperation agreements between Vietnam and Russia, a delegation of Russian veterans has visited Vietnam. This visit is expected to further strengthen the two countries' longstanding friendship and deepen defense collaboration, particularly between their navies. The visit follows the official trip to Russia by General Phan Van Giang, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, in May. The Russian scholars participating in the delegation reaffirmed their support for the peaceful settlement of disputes through diplomatic and legal processes, in accordance with international law. They specifically referenced the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability, freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea, and upholding the rule of law in the seas and oceans. Vietnam continues to play a constructive role within ASEAN by helping maintain unity and consensus while seeking common ground on the bloc’s most challenging issues. This commitment to regional stability and cooperation is a cornerstone of Vietnam's foreign policy. This engagement highlights Vietnam's strategic approach to foreign relations, leveraging historical partnerships while navigating complex regional dynamics. The reaffirmation of defense ties with Russia, a long-standing ally, underscores Vietnam's efforts to diversify its security partnerships and maintain a balance of power in Southeast Asia. The emphasis on international law and peaceful dispute resolution, particularly concerning the East Sea (South China Sea), aligns with Vietnam's consistent diplomatic stance on maritime security and sovereignty.
