Vietnam Coastal Fishermen Supported to Obtain Radio Equipment Licenses

In Vietnam's southern Vĩnh Long province, an important initiative is underway to enhance the safety of coastal fishing operations and streamline communication. On July 30th, at the Hàm Luông Border Guard Station, the Department of Science and Technology collaborated with the Provincial Border Guard Command to organize an information session and support event for fishermen regarding the licensing of radio frequency and equipment used on their fishing vessels. The session provided fishermen with detailed explanations on the proper use of modern radio communication equipment and the procedures for obtaining the necessary licenses. Vietnam has regulations in place for the installation and operation of radio communication devices to ensure safe navigation and smooth communication at sea. For fishing communities, these devices are increasingly crucial as a means of communication during adverse weather conditions or emergencies. This initiative offers concrete support to help fishermen comply with these regulations and obtain the required licenses smoothly. It is expected to prevent the use of illegal radio equipment and improve the overall reliability of the maritime communication infrastructure. Under Vietnam's one-party system, the government promotes policies that balance economic growth with the improvement of citizens' livelihoods, and support for the fishing sector, which underpins the coastal economy, is positioned as part of this effort. Furthermore, with its extensive coastline, Vietnam faces significant challenges in developing its maritime communication infrastructure from the perspective of maritime security and resource management. In recent years, amidst complex relations with China in the South China Sea, ensuring the safety of its own vessels and strengthening information gathering capabilities are national concerns for Vietnam.
