Lifespan Differences in Cats and Dogs: A Study on Pet Longevity in Indonesia

A recent study conducted in Indonesia has revealed that the average lifespan of pet cats and dogs varies significantly depending on their breed. Regarding cats, research in the United Kingdom analyzed 7,936 confirmed death records, indicating an average lifespan of approximately 11.7 years for pet cats. The "Burmese" breed topped the list with an average lifespan of 14.42 years. In contrast, the "Sphynx" breed had the shortest lifespan at an average of 6.68 years. "Persian" cats had an average lifespan of about 10.93 years. Sex also influences lifespan, with female cats tending to live an average of 1.33 years longer than males. Furthermore, mixed-breed cats were found to live about 1.5 years longer than purebred cats. Neutered or spayed cats also tended to live an average of 1.1 years longer. The shorter lifespan of the Sphynx breed is suspected to be related to a predisposition to various health issues, including heart conditions, skeletal problems, and eye or eyelid disorders. However, with proper care, Sphynx cats can reach around 14 years of age, and Burmese cats can even live up to approximately 21 years. Similar research was conducted on dogs, analyzing data from over 150 breeds and 584,734 individuals. The "Lancashire Heeler" showed the highest average lifespan at 15.4 years. Conversely, the "Caucasian Shepherd Dog" had the shortest lifespan, averaging around 5.4 years. Siberian Huskies had an average lifespan of 11.9 years.
