Daik Oo Prison: Political prisoners face unjust torture, 27 in solitary confinement, newborn dies due to malnutrition

Ayeyarwaddy Times (Daik Oo), July 30 The Myanmar Political Prisoners Network (PPNM) stated on July 29 that unjust treatment, including forced labor, solitary confinement, and torture, continues to be inflicted upon political prisoners at Daik Oo Central Prison in Daik Oo Township, Bago Region. At Daik Oo Prison, female political prisoners are being coerced into hard labor under threats of visitation and contact bans. Those who refuse are taken to separate punishment cells, where they are subjected to indefinite solitary confinement and beatings. Individuals who complain about the unjust treatment are accused of causing disturbances and are then beaten in groups by five female staff members with batons, banned from receiving visitors, and given solitary confinement punishments under fabricated charges. Currently, up to 27 political prisoners are collectively held in solitary confinement. Those in solitary confinement are being subjected to oppressive measures, including being given only one liter of water per day, not being allowed to shower for 14 days, being provided with only one blanket, and being fed only rice porridge. "Prison officials are spreading false information and propaganda. In reality, these are cases of solitary confinement under the guise of committing crimes. Lack of adequate medical care, pregnant mothers not receiving necessary medication, and the death of newborns are all instances where the human rights of everyone inside the prison are not being sufficiently met," an official from PPNM told the Ayeyarwaddy Times. It is known that a newborn who was born inside the prison died within 24 hours due to insufficient medical care and nutrition, as pregnant women and emergency surgical patients were not allowed to be admitted to external hospitals. PPNM also reported that approximately five political prisoners nearing the end of their sentences have had their sentences extended due to fabricated charges involving illegal items, and that the prisoners are suffering from severe psychological distress. According to the PPNM statement, these human rights violations are being led by Chief Officer Daw Zin Mar Kyi Aung, Deputy Chief Officer Daw San Nwe Oo, Officer Thazin Myint, Officer Thet Thet Zin, and Officer Thandar Soe.
