Following the incident, social media platforms saw a surge of unverified reports, including claims that the attack happened in Ba Ria city and exaggerated casualty figures of at least four dead and ten injured. Ba Ria city police refuted these claims on September 6, stating that no such incident occurred within their jurisdiction. However, they did not clarify the true location of the incident or the authenticity of circulating video footage. It was not until three days after the event, on September 7, that the Ho Chi Minh City Police officially confirmed the incident and provided a corrected account of the casualties, differing significantly from social media narratives. Initial police findings indicate the boy had a prior diagnosis of "severe stress reaction and adjustment disorder with mixed disturbance of conduct and emotions" and had exhibited signs of psychological instability recently. Authorities also suggest that exposure to negative content on foreign social media platforms may have influenced his perception and led to the attack. The authorities plan to continue gathering evidence on foreign content and online groups that may have influenced the perpetrator and will take legal action accordingly. They have urged the public not to speculate, post, or share unverified information and images, and have prohibited the dissemination of personal information of the students involved. Citizens are advised to follow official sources from state agencies for accurate updates. This incident highlights challenges in information control within Vietnam's one-party system and the rapid spread of information via social media, a recurring societal issue.
