Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Urges Support for 500-Day Fallen Soldier Identification Campaign
On the occasion of War Invalids and Martyrs Day, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha has urged its affiliates to support the nationwide "500-day campaign" aimed at identifying fallen soldiers. The Sangha calls for prayers and the handover of wartime files and memorabilia to aid the national remains collection effort.
The Standing Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) Executive Council has officially called on its affiliates to support the nationwide "500-day campaign" to identify fallen soldiers, ahead of the 79th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947–2026). According to a document issued by the VBS, central committees, institutes, and provincial and city chapters are urged to hold requiem ceremonies for heroic martyrs and cooperate in supporting the national campaign. The "500-day campaign" is a national initiative aimed at identifying and collecting the remains of soldiers who perished during the Vietnam War and other conflicts. Vietnam has long prioritized the identification and repatriation of missing soldiers, viewing it as a crucial national undertaking that provides emotional support to the populace and helps heal the wounds of war. The Buddhist Sangha is expected to play a significant role in soliciting information and cooperation from the public through its religious and moral influence. In the past, wartime files and memorabilia have been handed over to support the campaign and aid in identification efforts. Such national memorial and commemoration activities tend to be emphasized within Vietnam's one-party system as symbols of national unity and public cohesion.
