Philippines Faces Heightened Currency Pressure Amid Hawkish Fed Stance
The Philippines, running a current-account deficit and with limited AI boom benefits, faces greater currency pressure from expectations of higher US interest rates, according to Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ).
The Philippines is facing heightened currency pressure due to the hawkish stance of the US Federal Reserve (Fed), according to the latest analysis from Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ). Khoon Goh, head of Asia research at ANZ, stated in a note on Friday that Asian economies running wide current-account deficits and yet to significantly benefit from the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, such as the Philippines, could be more sensitive to expectations of higher US interest rates. This situation raises concerns about downward pressure on the Philippine peso. While the Philippine economy relies heavily on remittances from overseas workers, global interest rate hikes could potentially affect the cost of these remittances. Furthermore, an increase in import costs could spill over into domestic prices, contributing to inflationary pressures. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the country's central bank, will need to carefully manage its monetary policy to balance inflation control with economic growth. Geopolitical risks in the South China Sea and structural challenges such as delays in domestic infrastructure development could also contribute to uncertainty regarding foreign direct investment (FDI) and sustained economic growth. The interplay of these factors may amplify investor concerns about the stability of the Philippine economy.
