ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meet on 5-Point Consensus Implementation

The 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related consultations were held in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. As the chair, Cambodia emphasized the implementation of the "Five-Point Consensus" on the Myanmar situation, calling for strengthened regional cooperation and joint responses to regional challenges. During the meeting, ASEAN member states and dialogue partners exchanged views on the progress made in restoring peace and stability in Myanmar. The Five-Point Consensus, which includes an immediate cessation of violence, constructive dialogue among all parties, the appointment of an ASEAN special envoy, humanitarian assistance, and a visit by the special envoy to Myanmar, was a key focus, with discussions centering on its implementation and future direction. Cambodia, in its capacity as chair, underscored the importance of maintaining ASEAN's unity and centrality, and of promoting a consistent and effective approach to the complex challenges facing the region. The response to the Myanmar issue, in particular, was identified as a pressing challenge directly linked to ASEAN's credibility and the stability of the regional order. Furthermore, the meeting addressed other critical issues of shared concern for the ASEAN region, such as maritime security, cybersecurity, and sustainable development, exploring concrete measures to enhance cooperation frameworks. Cambodia provided a platform for finding solutions through constructive and comprehensive dialogue to address the challenges confronting ASEAN.
