Northern Vietnam Forecast to See Above-Average Rainfall in October, Says Meteorological Agency

Vietnam's National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has announced that from October 22 to November 20, the Northern Delta region is likely to experience higher rainfall than the average for many years. According to the center, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in the Northern Delta and Central regions during this period. Meanwhile, the Central Highlands and Southern regions are anticipated to continue having many days of showers and thunderstorms. This forecast may be related to previous predictions that El Niño will reach its peak by the end of 2026, increasing the risk of early heatwaves. Past reports have indicated disruptions to major construction projects in Hung Yen province, proactive responses in Ho Chi Minh City and the Southern regions to the risk of flooding from heavy rains, and the possibility of tropical depressions forming. Another report mentioned over 16,000 houses flooded and three deaths in some areas, highlighting the importance of responding to climate change. Vietnam continues its economic growth under a one-party system, but extreme weather events due to climate change can threaten the stability of people's lives by affecting agriculture and infrastructure. In particular, floods and droughts directly impact agriculture, a key pillar of Vietnam's economy, necessitating government efforts to strengthen adaptation measures against climate change. Furthermore, in relations with neighboring China, cooperation on water resource management and transboundary environmental issues will be important future challenges.
