Phnom Penh Advances to Phase 2 of Wastewater Management Project with Japanese Support

The Phnom Penh administration and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport convened a coordination committee meeting for the second phase of the wastewater management project, under the auspices of the Japanese government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This meeting, held on the afternoon of September 4, 2026, at the Cambodiana Hotel, was co-chaired by Ek Khun Doeun, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh, and Ros Vanna, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. Ek Khun Doeun, representing Governor Khuong Sreng, highlighted the project's objectives, stating that the investment in wastewater treatment plants, which requires a significant loan package, is crucial for improving public sanitation and health, reducing the incidence of diseases, and enhancing the urban environment of Phnom Penh to attract tourists and investors. Currently, Phnom Penh has a capacity to produce 1 million cubic meters of clean water per day, generating a comparable volume of wastewater across 27 rainwater catchment areas, necessitating efficient management. The meeting focused on reviewing project progress, examining and approving detailed designs, formulating an implementation plan, and gathering input from all relevant stakeholders, including students from the Technical University of Phnom Penh. These steps are vital to ensure the successful execution of the project, which is expected to significantly contribute to the improvement of living conditions and environmental quality in the rapidly developing capital.
