China, US Consult on Reciprocal Tariff Cuts, Cambodia's Economic Outlook Uncertain

China and the United States are consulting on reciprocal tariff cuts, with both sides aiming for swift implementation, according to China's Ministry of Commerce on Thursday. This move is expected to further boost bilateral trade. Meng Huating, a ministry official, stated at a news conference in Beijing that the economic and trade teams of both countries are maintaining close communication on specific arrangements for the trade council—a mechanism the two sides agreed to establish under the consensus reached by the two heads of state—and a reciprocal tariff reduction framework covering $30 billion worth of products on each side. "China is consulting widely on the proposed tariff reductions, seeking views from domestic companies and business associations, local governments, and U.S. companies and chambers of commerce in China. The U.S. side, meanwhile, is seeking public comment on the trade council and the tariff framework," Meng said. The two sides will maintain close communication, finalize tariff reduction arrangements for specific products, and work to advance their implementation as soon as possible, creating favorable conditions for further expanding bilateral trade, she added. This development in U.S.-China trade policy could indirectly impact Cambodia's economy. Cambodia has significant trade relationships with both the United States and China, and changes in the bilateral trade environment between the two powers could affect market demand and prices, particularly for exports like textiles and agricultural products. However, the precise extent of the impact remains unclear at this stage, and close monitoring of the implementation of policies by both countries will be necessary.
