Vietnam Railways Slashes Fares by Up to 40% to Stimulate Travel

Vietnam Railways is set to introduce a new fare reduction policy starting September 2026, aiming to stimulate domestic travel demand and enhance the profitability of its transport operations. Notably, discounts of up to 40% will be applied to certain sleeper train routes. This initiative goes beyond simple fare cuts, offering incentives such as discounts for round-trip tickets and early bookings. The aim is to make rail travel more accessible to a wider segment of the population. In the past, Vietnam Railways has implemented various measures to boost ridership, including special services during the Tet holiday and extended passenger ticket sales during the post-summer peak season. For instance, ticket sales for the 2027 Tet (Lunar New Year) Dinh Mui (Year of the Goat) officially commenced on August 30, 2026. To further improve passenger convenience, adjustments have also been made to the information displayed on tickets, with price displays removed from "Train boarding passes" since July 10, 2026. This fare reduction is seen as aligning with the government's economic policies to invigorate domestic consumption amidst ongoing economic recovery post-pandemic. Under Vietnam's one-party system, the government prioritizes balancing national economic growth with the stability of citizens' lives, making infrastructure development and the expansion of public services key policy objectives. The railway network, a crucial north-south transport artery, could also contribute to the revitalization of regional economies through increased utilization.
