Lao Ambassador Presents Credentials to Maldives President, Pledges Deeper Bilateral Ties

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to the Republic of the Maldives, Mrs Xayavong, presented her credentials to President Muizzu on July 27, expressing her commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations. Her embassy is based in New Delhi, India. President Muizzu warmly welcomed Mrs Xayavong, expressing confidence that her professional background and expertise will ensure success in her diplomatic assignment. He conveyed warm regards to President Thongloun Sisoulith of the Lao PDR, and to the government and people of Laos. The President highlighted the 14-year friendship between Laos and the Maldives, commending their mutual support in bilateral and multilateral frameworks, including the United Nations. Ambassador Xayavong conveyed sincere gratitude from President Thongloun Sisoulith, the Lao government, and the Lao people to President Muizzu and the Maldivian people. She thanked the Maldivian government for its enduring friendship and cooperation on regional and international stages, pledging to further expand and deepen bilateral relations during her tenure. Beyond its ties with the Maldives, Laos is actively engaged in strengthening international cooperation. On July 23, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane met with Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide to reaffirm their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation. On July 22, on the sidelines of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila, he led the Lao delegation to the 17th Mekong-Japan Cooperation (MJC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, contributing to regional cooperation efforts. Furthermore, on July 24, Laos was represented at the signing ceremony marking the accession of Poland, Lithuania, Romania, and Sweden to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), demonstrating its commitment to regional security. Domestically, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone chaired the government's regular monthly meeting for July on July 27, bringing together cabinet members and provincial leaders to review recent developments and set priorities for August. Additionally, the Alounmay Magazine of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and Cong San (Communist) Magazine of the Communist Party of Vietnam reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in political theory, professional training, and digital media development. These developments indicate Laos's strategy, under its one-party system, to maintain its traditional ties with Vietnam while exploring relationships with Western countries and Japan, aiming to expand its role on regional and international stages. Facing economic challenges, Laos appears to be seeking international support and investment opportunities through its diplomatic engagement.
