DA, NIA Seek Increased Funding for 2027 to Combat El Niño Effects

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) and National Irrigation Administration (NIA) on Tuesday appealed for budget increases in some of their projects to respond to the possible impacts of El Niño in the country. During the House committee on appropriations’ briefing on the budget proposal of the two agencies, committee chairperson Rep. Mikaela Su Suares was present. El Niño is known to cause droughts and water shortages in the Philippines, potentially devastating agricultural production. Key crops, particularly rice, which heavily relies on water resources, are at significant risk. The DA and NIA are seeking investment in specific measures to mitigate these impacts, including the rehabilitation and construction of irrigation facilities, promotion of drought-resistant crops, and enhancement of water management system efficiency. They explained that increased funding is essential to implement these projects as planned or even ahead of schedule. The effects of El Niño in the Philippines have historically led to soaring food prices and reduced farmer incomes, directly impacting the lives of citizens. This budget request could be a crucial step towards ensuring future food security and strengthening the country's adaptive capacity to climate change.
