Vietnam's Top Leader Calls for ASEAN Community Strengthening

On the occasion of the 59th anniversary of ASEAN's establishment, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), and the 31st anniversary of Vietnam's accession to ASEAN, Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm held a reception for ASEAN ambassadors and heads of mission in Hanoi. Representing the leadership of the Party and State of Vietnam, General Secretary and President Tô Lâm strongly called for cooperation from all member nations to build a united and strong ASEAN Community. This reflects Vietnam's proactive diplomatic stance aimed at maintaining and promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region. Under its one-party system, Vietnam has prioritized economic growth and pursued an open-door policy. While deepening economic ties with China, Vietnam maintains a cautious approach to issues such as territorial disputes. Strengthening unity within ASEAN can be interpreted as part of Vietnam's strategy to maximize its national interests amidst complex geopolitical circumstances. General Secretary and President Tô Lâm also touched upon Vietnam's domestic development, particularly the rapid transformation of the capital, Hanoi, expressing a strong commitment to economic growth and infrastructure development. This suggests that Vietnam's contribution to the ASEAN Community is intrinsically linked to its own sustainable development. This meeting underscores Vietnam's intention to enhance its regional influence and strengthen its voice in the international arena through the ASEAN framework. Vietnam needs to coordinate with diverse ASEAN nations while navigating evolving international dynamics, such as the US-China rivalry.
