Cambodia Highlights Biodiversity Conservation Importance at International Forum

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – September 15, 2026 – An international workshop on "Forest Research and Education" was held in Phnom Penh, highlighting the critical importance of biodiversity conservation in Cambodia. Dr. Sao Rota, Head of Biodiversity and Science Management at the International Conservation (CI) Cambodia, presented on the rich biodiversity present in the protected terrestrial landscapes supported by CI. These areas include the Central Cardamom Mountains Protected Landscape, the Prey Long Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Virachey-Siem Pang National Park. Dr. Rota's presentation underscored the ecological significance, biodiversity value, and conservation importance of these priority landscape areas. He also presented the findings of another study titled "Conservation Benefits of REDD+ Projects in Tropical Forest Protected Areas for Bird Communities." This research indicated that the implementation of REDD+ projects has yielded positive impacts on bird species diversity and forest conservation within the studied region. The workshop, organized by the Royal University of Agriculture, drew a total of 140 participants, including professors, researchers, university lecturers, and students from national and international universities and research institutions. The event served as a valuable forum for sharing knowledge, exchanging scientific experiences, and discussing biodiversity conservation, forest ecology, restoration, and sustainable landscape management in Cambodia.
