MANILA, Philippines — More than 300 families were left homeless after a fire struck a residential community in Pasig City on Wednesday afternoon. The fire, which destroyed over 100 houses in Barangay Kapitolyo, broke out at around 2 p.m. and reached the third alarm. Barangay Kapitolyo chairman Alexis Rafael Torres said 314 families or 1,076 people were displaced. They are taking shelter in evacuation centers. Torres said they received reports that the fire started in an unregistered liquefied petroleum gas tank store. City fire marshal Superintendent Leo Andiso said firefighters had to navigate through narrow alleys occupied by residents who were saving their belongings. The fire was declared under control at 5:45 p.m. and extinguished at 10:21 p.m. There were no casualties. A child who was earlier reported missing was found by his family, Andiso said. The local government is appealing for ready-to-eat-food, sleeping kits and other relief items for the affected residents.
