DepEd urges LGUs to limit class suspensions to specific areas

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday urged local government units (LGUs) to be more specific when announcing class suspensions to prevent the loss of learning time while keeping students and school personnel safe. Education Secretary Sonny Angara made the appeal ahead of the expected issuance of an Executive Order (EO) that would institutionalize the policy. "We are asking the LGUs to be specific in their announcements," Angara said in an interview. He explained that when LGUs declare class suspensions, they should specify the particular areas or schools that will be affected. "This is to avoid the unnecessary loss of learning time," Angara said. He added that the DepEd prioritizes the safety of students in a conducive learning environment. "We want to ensure that students are safe and that they are in a conducive learning environment," Angara said. He noted that class suspensions are sometimes unavoidable due to natural disasters such as typhoons and floods. "However, we want to minimize the impact on learning," Angara said. He added that LGUs are expected to make informed decisions tailored to their respective areas. "LGUs are the ones who know their areas best," Angara said.
