Vietnam Bolsters Foreign Ties Through High-Level Diplomacy and Economic Cooperation

Vietnam is strengthening its multi-faceted approach in both diplomacy and economy to enhance its international standing. Party General Secretary and President To Lam is scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly high-level general debate in the US and make official visits to the US and Canada, aiming to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and these nations. These diplomatic moves, embodying the foreign policy pillars of openness, independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, diversification, and multilateralization, signal Vietnam's evolving role on the international stage. Its partnership with the UN is also shifting from a recipient of support to a contributor, with Vietnam's active engagement at the UN General Assembly anticipated. Economically, Vietnam is promoting trade and industrial cooperation with China and ASEAN countries. Notably, the Vietnam International Sourcing Expo 2025 (VIS 2025) will serve as an opportunity to strengthen Vietnam's role in regional supply chains. The successful first export of electric buses by Vietnamese automaker Kim Long Motor to Thailand is a symbolic event showcasing the improved international competitiveness of domestic manufacturing. Domestically, a balance between preserving cultural heritage and modernization is emphasized. For instance, the vision to develop Bac Ninh province into a modern city with a distinct cultural identity, and historical commemorative events at the Hung Kings Temple in Phu Tho province, demonstrate Vietnam's commitment to passing on its rich cultural heritage to future generations. Furthermore, Vietnam is focusing on improving its legal framework and reducing logistics costs to enhance the sustainability of its economic growth. The target of reducing logistics costs to below 12% of GDP by 2030 and developing international-standard logistics centers is part of Vietnam's strategy to further boost its competitiveness in the global economy. These diverse initiatives clearly indicate Vietnam's stance, under its one-party system, to pursue economic growth while emphasizing international cooperation and cultural inheritance.
