Chairman Min Aung Hlaing says he has been very lenient towards Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

Myanmar's Chairman Min Aung Hlaing said in an interview with Time magazine, published on September 23, that he has been very lenient towards Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Following accusations of electoral fraud by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government in the 2020 general election, the Tatmadaw seized power in 2021, and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to imprisonment. "I have been very lenient towards her. We have done our best to prevent the situation from reaching this point," Chairman Min Aung Hlaing told an interview with the US-based Time magazine. In April of this year, Min Aung Hlaing retired from his position as Commander-in-Chief of the Tatmadaw and became a civilian chairman. Since then, Chairman Min Aung Hlaing has been engaged in diplomatic efforts with foreign countries, but many countries continue to be concerned about the condition of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who is 81 years old. Days before Min Aung Hlaing's trip to Thailand in August, the President's Office released rare photos of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi meeting with a senior official from the International Committee of the Red Cross. Chairman Min Aung Hlaing told Time magazine that the possibility of an amnesty for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi depends on her, and that circumstances could change if reasons for reconsideration arise on their part. In April, Chairman Min Aung Hlaing ordered Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to be transferred from prison to house arrest in Naypyidaw. "There are various forms of democracy. There is American democracy, and there is European democracy. As for Myanmar, I will definitely work to achieve a democratic system that truly aligns with our culture and customs," Chairman Min Aung Hlaing said in an interview with Time magazine.
