Vietnam's Top Leader Arrives in NY for UNGA, Eyes Expanded US Cooperation

General Secretary and President To Lam of Vietnam has arrived in New York to attend the high-level general debate of the 81st UN General Assembly (UNGA 81). During his visit, he is scheduled to deliver a significant address and hold meetings with leaders of countries, partners, and international organizations. He is also slated to meet with US administration and congressional leaders, signaling a move to deepen Vietnam-US relations. Lam's participation and address at UNGA 81 will reaffirm Vietnam's strong support for and commitment to the central role of the UN in multilateral cooperation and the promotion of respect for international law. Expectations are high for expanding cooperation with the United States, particularly in fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), data centers, advanced digital services, and human resource training. These areas align closely with Vietnam's national goal of having the digital economy contribute 30% to its GDP by 2030. The visit and presence at the UN General Assembly reflect Vietnam's development and foreign policy vision, prioritizing peace, stability, security, and the well-being of its people. This is expected to further strengthen the Vietnam-US relationship, which has seen steady development since the establishment of their Comprehensive Partnership in 2017. Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam, Jim Nickel, views the visit as an opportunity to further advance bilateral relations, highlighting their substantive nature and enormous potential. In France, Ambassador Trinh Duc Hai noted the long and eventful history shared by the two nations, emphasizing that contemporary relations look towards the future beyond their shared past. Regarding relations with Japan, a Japanese official affirmed that Vietnam-Japan ties have entered a new stage of development. Cooperation in finance, semiconductors, AI, critical minerals, and energy is expected to foster mutual growth and contribute to regional peace and prosperity. This suggests Vietnam's increasing importance in global supply chains. Vietnam is reinforcing its commitment to playing a proactive and responsible role in the international community, contributing to regional and global peace, stability, cooperation, and development.
