Indian Education Minister Resigns Amidst Student Protests Over Exam Irregularities

In India, student protests against alleged irregularities in university entrance exams have intensified, leading to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on July 25. The minister resigned six days after the protests began, following accusations of fraudulent practices in the university admission tests. Supporters of the Indian Dalit movement, which is reportedly leading the protests, have hailed the resignation as a victory for democracy. Protesters gathered in New Delhi, expressing their jubilation. The CJP (People's Party of India), acting as a spokesperson for the movement, declared that democracy had triumphed. Abhisek Deepak, founder of the movement, posted on social media, "We did it." He explained that student anger stemmed from widespread fraudulent activities in the medical college entrance exams, which saw over two million applicants. Reports indicate that the results of this examination were subsequently annulled following the suicides of approximately 20 students. On July 20, police used batons and tear gas against thousands of youth and students marching towards Parliament to demand the education minister's resignation. Following the minister's announcement, the protests have since concluded. According to police, 180 people were injured during the demonstration, while protesters claim the number of injured is in the hundreds. This incident highlights the potential for systemic issues rooted in India's caste system and educational inequalities to amplify student discontent.
