Disabled Elephant Survives 2km Yangtze River Ride in Chiang Mai Flood

CHIANG MAI, Thailand – A 12-year-old female elephant with a disability affecting her right front leg survived a harrowing ordeal after being swept nearly two kilometers by flash floodwaters in Mae Wang district on September 19. Rescuers successfully brought her ashore, and she is now under close observation. The elephant, named "Phang Aem," was with other elephants near the Mae Wang River in Mae Win subdistrict when the sudden and powerful flash flood struck. According to her owner, Theerapat Trangprakan of Rom Daen Chang, mahouts attempted to move the elephants away from the rising river. However, Phang Aem's congenital disability, reportedly caused by her mother stepping on her leg shortly after birth, significantly hindered her mobility. Unable to keep pace with the other elephants, Phang Aem was swept into the river and carried by the strong current for approximately two kilometers. Fortunately, the river section she traversed was free of large rocks, and she sustained no visible injuries. The mahout team managed to call her towards the bank and guide her safely out of the water. Following her rescue, the Rom Daen Chang team, including mahouts and veterinary personnel, conducted an examination. Phang Aem was initially trembling from fear but calmed down. A thorough check of her body, joints, and muscles revealed no signs of pain or obvious physical injury. Concerns remained regarding potential internal injuries from the force of the flood. However, her ability to urinate normally with clear urine provided reassuring immediate signs. Phang Aem has since been moved to a secure location for continued monitoring. The team plans to observe her condition for at least 24 hours and will keep her away from the river until the flood situation subsides. (TNA)
