12 Officials in Da Nang Prosecuted for Bribery in Illegal Construction and Utility Services

Twelve officials in Da Nang, central Vietnam, have been prosecuted and detained on charges of bribery, signaling a significant crackdown on corruption in public services. The group includes eight officials from the Urban Order department and four employees from the electricity and water supply sectors. Specifically, employees from the Lien Chieu Electricity branch and the Area 4 Water Supply Enterprise are accused of prioritizing electricity and water supply to hundreds of cases that did not meet the required conditions. In addition to the public servants, five other individuals have been prosecuted for forging documents and acting as intermediaries for bribery. These individuals allegedly paid bribes to officials to secure permits for illegal construction and utility connections. The investigation revealed that these acts of extortion and corruption in essential public services had been occurring for an extended period. Authorities stated that these practices disrupted urban planning order, damaged the cityscape, and caused direct frustration and anger among the public.
