Vietnam, Laos, China Boost Border Trade Through Digital Transformation

Dien Bien province in northern Vietnam hosted a conference to promote border trade among Vietnam, Laos, and China. Held on September 18, the event, themed “Digital Transformation and Green Trade: A Breakthrough Driving Force for Vietnam-Laos-China Border Trade,” aimed to boost exports and imports and expand trade in the northern region. The conference was jointly organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the People's Committee of Dien Bien province. It emphasized the adoption of digital technologies and the promotion of sustainable trade practices in border areas. Discussions likely focused on implementing digital platforms and enhancing e-commerce for cross-border trade, aligning with Vietnam's economic growth strategy under its one-party system and its push towards a digital economy. Dien Bien province has seen advancements in agricultural modernization and infrastructure development in recent years, making it a notable location for such an event. For instance, the province has implemented measures to revitalize its local economy, including achieving its target for new coffee cultivation areas and providing support for the purchase of new vehicles in 17 administrative units (xã). Vietnam maintains a complex relationship with China while deepening economic ties. In the context of rising geopolitical tensions, diversifying and optimizing trade routes is a critical issue, especially from an economic security perspective. Digitalization is an indispensable element in addressing these challenges and strengthening supply chain resilience. Border trade with Laos also holds significant importance for the Vietnamese economy. This conference served as a platform to explore concrete measures for making trade among the three countries smoother and more efficient. For example, the reported customs clearance value of 45.3 million USD at the Lao Cai International Border Gate highlights the significant potential of border trade. The Vietnamese government considers digital transformation a top national priority and is committed to accelerating its promotion in the trade sector.
